John Ronald Reuel Tolkien föddes 1892 i Sydafrika. Han kom som treåring till England och blev tidigt föräldralös. Som ung officer deltog han i första världskriget men drabbades av skyttegravsfeber och hamnade på sjukhus, där han började skriva på Silmarillion .1924 blev han professor i engelska vid universitetet i Leeds och året därpå professor i anglosaxiska vid universitetet i Oxford.
