The events in King John take place in the 13th century, well before Shakespeare’s other English history plays. After the death of John's brother, Richard I, John rules England. John's young nephew, Arthur, has a claim to the throne and is supported by the French. KING JOHN Here have we war for war and blood for blood, Controlment for controlment: so answer France. King John A messenger from France arrives in the English court, demanding that King John abdicate his throne in favor of his nephew Arthur. The messenger speaks for King Philip of France, who supports Arthur's claim as the rightful heir to the throne; when John refuses to step down, France threatens war. His King John film was the first ever time a Shakespeare play had been filmed.

Act I Act I Scene 1. The court of King John. King John ("John") receives the emissary from the French king Philip II of France, Chatillon. Phillip supports the claim of Arthur Plantagenet ("Arthur" of Brittaine or Brittany), son of John's deceased brother Geoffrey, to the throne of England, Ireland, and the French territories Poitiers, Anjou, Touraine, and Maine, and believes John is a usurper.

Each king asks Angers's citizens whom they support as the King of England, but the citizens say they support the rightful king. Philip and John's armies go to war, but are so equally matched that neither side wins. If we view King John as a laughable buffoon who’s somehow managed to win his way onto the throne, and we interpret the pomp and ceremony of the play as a deliberate send-up of the puppet-show that is politics (plus ca change), then the perceived infelicities of King John become more understandable, especially for a play that Shakespeare is thought to have written in 1596, by which time he König Johann (engl. The Life and Death of King John) ist ein Historiendrama in fünf Akten von William Shakespeare, das in gedruckter Form erstmals in der Folioausgabe von 1623 erschienen ist.

1511: Release Date: Oct 1, 1998: Copyright Status Shakespeare wrote The Life and Death of King John relatively early in his career. The essential story reflects common themes of Shakespeare's other history plays, notably a disputed succession to the throne and the looming threats of rebellion and war. King Philip of France threatens war if the tyrannical King John of England won’t abdicate his throne. In this history play, Shakespeare explores themes of inheritance in the figure of Philip the Bastard (illegitimate son of the late King Richard); medieval women’s (albeit limited) political influence in the characters of Eleanor and Constance; and double-dealing through Hubert’s The Life and Death of King John, a history play by William Shakespeare, dramatizes the reign of King John of England (ruled 1199 1216), son of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine and father of Henry III of England. It is believed to have been written in the mid-1590s but was not published until it appeared in the First Folio in 1623. Se hela listan på shakespeare-online.com Pris: 119 kr.
